Stander was furious, but she wasn’t sure at whom exactly. On the one side, she wanted to snarl at the slip of girl for ordering her about as if Stander was some commoner. And then there was Jeffrey. She wanted to kill him just because she could. And of course, because she was so incredibly jealous of his relationship with Caritas. Santessa of all the people involved, should be aware of how precious her time with Caritas was to her. She pushed her hands into her pockets and followed the bickering pair down to the beach.

“…halfway to the boat already,” she overheard Jeffrey say.

“And you didn’t stop her? What happened between the two of you, Jeffrey? You seemed to get along quite well yesterday.”

Jeffrey’s jaw jutted out stubbornly and Stander fantasized about slapping that petulant look off his face. “You should ask her yourself.”

That did it for her and Stander moved faster than the blink of an eye. The next moment, Jeffrey was dangling from her grip, his face twisted in terror at the sight of her beast. She knew with her glowing red eyes and sharp incisors, that she had his full attention.

“Care to answer the question now?” she growled.

“She…she…”

“Stander,” Santé’s voice came out of the dark and they all turned to see her stepping out of the surf. She came to a halt next to Stander. “He has all the right to be angry at me. I was there when Tala turned him.” Next to her, Stander heard Caritas gasp. “I appear to have suppressed the memory.”

“To assuage your guilt, perhaps?” Jeffrey snorted.

“Because that was exactly how I was turned seven hundred years ago,” Santé said calmly. “They took you away and I left soon afterwards. I couldn’t stay after what had happened.”

Santé spoke about Jeffrey’s situation, but Stander knew it went deeper than that. It must’ve been quite traumatic for the vampire to have witnessed the event. She turned to Caritas.

“Thank you for the wine. Good night.”

She walked to where their boat sat on the sand. The night had turned too emotional, too quickly. They all probably needed some time to recover. She knew that she needed some time alone. She heard Santé behind her and waited for the woman to join her before they pushed the boat into the waves. The trip to the yacht was made in complete silence. Vampires didn’t do well when it came to emotions.
